st 2 decades, baby bedding has become of great concern. First there was SIDS and than there were the chemicals. Data from the US Consumer Product safety commission indicates that may have been at least 900 deaths attributed to SIDS. While the exact cause still remains unknown, there is suspicion that suffocation may have been caused by comforters, pillows, quilts or soft bedding. To prevent unnecessary deaths from soft bedding, there has been a campaign to promote safety awareness in parents who shop for baby bedding. The majority of retails outlets have also attached leaflets and statements on the cribs warning parents about Crib safety and the importance of buying proper bedding. For a long time parents got mixed messages about what to buy and what not to buy. However, today the recommendations for buying baby bedding are simple, straight forward and include the following:

The baby should always be placed on his/her back during sleep. The mattress should be firm and tight fitting

All unnecessary things like comforters, quilts, pillow like stuffed toys should be removed from the crib

When a blanket is used, it should only be placed as far as the chest. The other edge of the blanket should be tightly tucked underneath the crib

Ensure that the baby’s head remains uncovered during sleep.

While all of us enjoy sleeping on a water bed or a soft mattress- this is not so for babies

The other aspect of safety is to buy baby bedding which is made from organic material. For years, many baby products including furniture, cribs and clothing were made from synthetic materials. These materials have played a major role in the development of skin rashes, allergies and other disorders in children. With growing awareness of our environment, many manufacturers of baby products are now making organic products for babies. Organic baby bedding is made from cotton which has not been exposed to chemicals, insecticides or weed killers. There are no dyes or colorful decorations which contain toxic chemicals. This is important because your baby will sleep for the major part of his first year in a crib and be exposed to the mattress for long time.

Further many of these organic baby bedding are flame or fire resistant and also are water proof. They are biodegradable and do not pose an environmental hazard when it comes time to disposal.

While organic products are good, the ultimate responsibility for safety depends on the parent. Parents who read labels before they buy baby products and maintain a safe environment for the baby generally have children who grow up without any major medical problems.
